Welcome Message by the Dean
In an era of technology, economic recession, and social difficulties, the School of Education and Social Sciences highlights and invests in one’s role, social cohesion, social prosperity and the development of culture. By investing in the development of a society’s cultural capital through social and human sciences reinforcement, we contribute to the production of knowledge in these specific fields. Our history along with our graduates’ successes constitute our compass. At the same time, our School as a dynamic organisation, adapts to new circumstances. We develop new, innovative undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in cutting-edge areas for the science of today and tomorrow.
The mission of the School is the production and transfer of knowledge in Education Sciences and Social Sciences, identification and investigation of social, psychological and educational problems, education of young people for staffing specific productive sectors of our society, and training and education of executives in the specific fields. Our emphasis is on education at its various levels, on social work, and psychology. Some of the skills we develop are critical thinking, analytical and synthetic ability, creativity and adaptability.
The School of Education and Social Sciences consists of two departments, the Department of Education and the Department of Psychology and Social Work. To realise its vision, the School has developed and offers innovative programmes of studies, which adopt modern practices and meet high quality standards in tertiary education. Four undergraduate programmes and various conventional and distance learning postgraduate programmes are offered in the main areas of Education and Social Sciences.. Special emphasis is given on the development of our undergraduate and postgraduate students’ research abilities through collaborations with the academic staff, and their participation in research programmes and activities of both departments. The School offers three doctoral programmes in Education, Environmental Studies - Sustainable Development and Social Work. A significant number of postgraduate students have job opportunities at university as researchers and teaching staff in laboratory courses, gaining valuable experiences from their academic mentors, which are considered important assets for their future professional and research career.
Many of our undergraduate students have continued their studies at a postgraduate level, receiving scholarships at universities in Cyprus, Europe and China. Furthermore, many of our postgraduate students have continued their studies at a doctoral level, while graduates of our programmes of studies are employed in both the public and private sector. The path that every young person has to follow is difficult, in an ever changing social reality. “The right path is uphill” (N. Kazantzakis), which requires the individual to have developed strategies, skills, and abilities to adjust and move on. By emphasising excellence in teaching and research at our School, we show young people the way, provide them with assets and we are certain of their successful career.
