Frederick School of Medicine Executive Team
The development of the Frederick University School of Medicine is led by a distinguished executive team with extensive international experience in medical education, clinical training, and academic leadership. Working in close collaboration with The University of Manchester, the team is responsible for the design, implementation, and successful accreditation of the programme by the competent authorities in Cyprus, ensuring full alignment with UK standards and global best practices in medical education. Bringing together expertise across academic leadership, clinical training delivery, and operational development, the team is committed to establishing a high-quality, student-centred medical school that meets the evolving needs of healthcare systems in Cyprus and beyond.

Professor Dimitris Kardamakis is a distinguished clinical oncologist and academic leader with extensive experience in medical education, research, and healthcare management. He is a Professor Emeritus of Radiation Oncology at the University of Patras, where he has played a central role in teaching, clinical practice, and research. Notably, Professor Kardamakis served as the Dean of the School of Health Sciences at the University of Patras for six years, providing strategic academic leadership.
He trained in radiotherapy and oncology in leading UK institutions, including Guy’s Hospital and The Middlesex Hospital in London, and has been actively involved in international clinical trials and multidisciplinary cancer research. His scholarly contribution includes textbook chapters in radiotherapy and radiobiology, co-editorship of the book “Bone Metastases” (Sringer, two editions), and numerous peer-reviewed publications alongside leadership in the development of radiobiology research infrastructure. Professor Kardamakis is a co-founder of the Hellenic Society of Geriatric Oncology and has served on executive committees of several non-profit scientific organisations.
As Founding Dean, Professor Kardamakis leads the Medical School’s academic development, the adoption of The University of Manchester MBChB curriculum, and the accreditation of the programme, ensuring alignment with international standards and best practices in medical education.

Dr Spyros Pipis is a highly experienced consultant paediatrician and academic clinician with a strong background in both medical education and clinical service delivery. He is a Clinical Professor of Paediatrics and is Head of the Paediatric Department at Aretaeio Hospital in Nicosia.
A graduate of The University of Manchester Medical School, Dr Pipis completed his specialist training in the United Kingdom and was a Consultant Paediatrician within the NHS before returning to Cyprus. He holds multiple UK professional qualifications, including membership of the Royal College of Physicians and fellowship of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, and has developed a recognised clinical and research profile in paediatric respiratory medicine.
Dr Pipis has extensive experience in clinical teaching within international medical programmes and has contributed to curriculum delivery and student training in collaboration with leading institutions.
In his role as a Vice Dean, he oversees the development and coordination of clinical training across partner hospitals and primary care providers, and coordinates with The University of Manchester to ensure high-quality clinical education and alignment with accreditation requirements and international best practice.

Mr John Surrey has 40 years of experience in leadership and management roles across various sectors, including international medical education, market research, and government. Most recently he served as Chief Operating Officer of Brunel Medical School up to its launch in 2022, playing a key role in the development of this new institution in London.
Previously, for 9 years Mr Surrey was a member of the leadership team that started the first medical school in Cyprus. He was involved in that project from its inception and led marketing/communications, student recruitment, admissions, and student services.
Prior to entering the higher education sector, Mr Surrey was a global marketing director with Synovate, a top-5 market research company. A graduate of Georgetown University, he began his career with the US Government’s Foreign Broadcast Information Service, serving in management and editorial roles in Nicosia, Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Panama City, as well as in Washington, DC.
As COO, Mr Surrey leads the development of the Medical School’s operations and oversees professional services staffing, as well as coordinating with The University of Manchester on partnership matters.
