Dr. Dimitris Nikolaides

Dr. Demetris Nicolaides holds Diploma in Civil Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), as well as MSc in Structural Engineering from the Cardiff University, UK. From the same school he received his PhD in Civil Engineering in 2004, in the research area of fracture and fatigue of Ultra High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Concretes (UHPFRCs). He is currently an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at Frederick University in Cyprus. He teaches in under graduate and postgraduate programs of studies in the School of Engineering and particularly in Civil Engineering Department. He worked as a civil engineering consultant in Greece and Cyprus, being involved in large scale projects. He is a member of local and international scientific and professional bodies and organizations, a reviewer for a large number of scientific journals, evaluator of scientific proposals for the European Commission, as well as the president of the National Technical Committee for Eurocode 2 (Concrete Structures). Top of Form Dr. Nicolaides' research spans several key areas within concrete technology, building materials and structural engineering. Specifically, he explores the effective reuse of Construction and Demolition Wastes (CDW) and other industrial by-products in concrete mixtures, aiming to enhance sustainability in construction practices. Additionally, his work delves into the development of Geopolymer Concretes, where waste materials are repurposed to create innovative building materials, contributing to environmental conservation efforts. Dr. Nicolaides also investigates UHPFRCCs, focusing on their mechanical properties, durability, and applications in protecting structures against blast and impact loading. Furthermore, he explores the realm of 3D Printing of Cementitious Materials, striving to optimize the rheological characteristics and interlayer properties for advanced construction techniques. Similarly, his teaching interests are diverse, as he has developed and taught several courses related to the above topics. Dr. Nicolaides has coordinated numerous research programs and has significant scholarly work in scientific books, journals, and conference proceedings. He has received many scholarships and distinctions, both during his studies and as an academic.

Ο Δρ. Δημήτρης Νικολαΐδης κατέχει Δίπλωμα Πολιτικού Μηχανικού από το Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο (ΕΜΠ), καθώς και μεταπτυχιακό τίτλο Δομοστατικού Μηχανικού από το Πανεπιστήμιο Cardiff της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας. Από το ίδιο Πανεπιστήμιο απέκτησε το 2004 διδακτορικό τίτλο στον τομέα της Πολιτικής Μηχανικής, στην ερευνητική περιοχή των ινοπλισμένων σκυροδεμάτων υπέρ-υψηλής επιτελεστικότητας (UHPFRCs). Είναι Αναπληρωτής Καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Πολιτικών Μηχανικών του Πανεπιστημίου Frederick, όπου ιδάσκει σε προγράμματα σπουδών προπτυχιακού και μεταπτυχιακού επιπέδου στην Πολυτεχνική Σχολή και συγκεκριμένα στο Τμήμα Πολιτικών Μηχανικών ενώ έχει εργαστεί ως σύμβουλος μηχανικός τόσο στην Κύπρο, όσο και στο εξωτερικό. Είναι μέλος εγχώριων και διεθνών επιστημονικών και επαγγελματικών σωμάτων και οργανισμών, κριτής σε μεγάλο αριθμό επιστημονικών περιοδικών, αξιολογητής επιστημονικών προτάσεων για την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή, καθώς και πρόεδρος της Εθνικής Τεχνικής Επιτροπής για τον Ευρωκώδικα 2 (Κατασκευές από Σκυρόδεμα). Τα ερευνητικά του ενδιαφέροντα συμπεριλαμβάνουν την τεχνολογία σκυροδέματος, το πεδίο των δομικών υλικών, καθώς και της δομοστατικής μηχανικής. Συγκεκριμένα, η έρευνα του επικεντρώνεται στην ανακύκλωση Αποβλήτων Εκσκαφών, Κατασκευών και Κατεδαφίσεων (ΑΕΚΚ) καθώς και άλλων βιομηχανικών παραπροϊόντων για την παραγωγή νέων σκυροδεμάτων. Επίσης, έχει μελετήσει τα θέματα της αξιοποίησης των διαφόρων στερεών αποβλήτων για την παραγωγή νέων δομικών υλικών μέσω της τεχνολογίας του γεωπολυμερισμού, καθώς και την ανάπτυξη UHPFRCs για την προστασία κατασκευών και κρίσιμων υποδομών έναντι ακραίων συνθηκών φόρτισης. Επίσης μελετά το θέμα της τρισδιάστατης εκτύπωσης υλικών και στη μελέτη των ιδιοτήτων τους. Παρόμοια είναι και τα διδακτικά του ενδιαφέροντα, καθώς έχει αναπτύξει και διδάξει αριθμό μαθημάτων σχετικά με τα πιο πάνω θέματα. Ο Δρ. Νικολαΐδης έχει συντονίσει μεγάλο αριθμό ερευνητικών προγραμμάτων, ενώ διαθέτει σημαντικό συγγραφικό επιστημονικό έργο σε επιστημονικά βιβλία, περιοδικά και πρακτικά συνεδρίων. Έχει λάβει πολλές υποτροφίες και διακρίσεις, τόσο κατά την περίοδο των σπουδών του, όσο και ως ακαδημαϊκός.
