Ms. Hourig Torossian

Short CV

Hourig Torossian studied Fine Arts (Painting) in the U.K. and gained a first class BA honors degree from Wimbledon School of Art and an MA degree in Fine Arts, from the Royal College of Art in London. Since graduating in 1994 she has been a practicing artist, exhibiting work in Cyprus, Greece and the United Kingdom. In 2005 she represented Cyprus in Austria, highlighting artist’s works from the ten new E.U. member states. She is currently an Associate Professor at Frederick University, teaching art and design courses within the Arts and Communication Department. She is a member of the Cyprus Chamber of Fine Arts (1995 – present), and an elected committee member of The Cyprus Printmakers Association (2015 – present). She has participated in international Print Festivals mainly in Athens and Piraeus. Recent curated group exhibitions include the ‘Mediterranean’ in 2022, at the House of Cyprus in Athens and the Platforms Project at Technopolis Athens, in 2023, where her group entry with 5 participants, explored notions of ‘Cohabitation’. Her work often explores concepts of preservation both in a personal and collective way that addresses and questions our connections to people and places. In other words the preservation of family history, cultural identity and traditions. Her most recent solo exhibition entitled ‘On Paper’ took place in 2018, at the contemporary art space S:242 in Nicosia where she presented a series of large scale works on paper, with the theme developed from decorative aspects of architectural features found around the old town of Nicosia. Characteristic features of her work include the use of portraiture, text and other symbolic visual imagery, used within a framework of colour and Symmetry.

Η Χουρίκ Τοροσιάν σπούδασε Καλές Τέχνες στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο όπου απέκτησε Πτυχίο στη Ζωγραφική με άριστα από τη σχολή Καλών Τεχνών Wimbledon και Μεταπτυχιακό στις Καλές Τέχνες από το Royal College of Art του Λονδίνου. Από την αποφοίτησή της το 1994 είναι εν ενεργεία καλλιτέχνης με εκθέσεις στην Κύπρο, την Ελλάδα και το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο. Το 2005 εκπροσώπησε την Κύπρο στην Αυστρία με θέμα - το έργο καλλιτεχνών από τα δέκα νέα κράτη μέλη της Ευρωπαϊκής ένωσης. Διδάσκει καλές και εφαρμοσμένες τέχνες στο τμήμα Τεχνών και Επικοινωνίας του Πανεπιστημίου Frederick και είναι αναπληρωτής Καθηγήτρια. Είναι μέλος του Επιμελητηρίου Εικαστικών Τεχνών Κύπρου και εκλεγμένο μέλος της επιτροπής του Σωματείου, Κύπριοι Χαράκτες. Έχει συμμετάσχει σε διεθνή φεστιβάλ της χαρακτικής κυρίως στην Αθήνα και τον Πειραιά. Πρόσφατες επιμελημένες ομαδικές εκθέσεις με τίτλο «Μεσόγειο», 2022, στο Σπίτι της Κύπρου, Αθήνα και το Platforms Project στη Τεχνόπολη του Δήμου Αθηναίων, 2023, όπου η ομαδική πρόταση με 5 συμμετέχοντες διερεύνησε τις έννοιες της «Συγκατοίκησης». Το έργο της διερευνά προσωπικές και συλλογικές έννοιες ενός χώρου η τόπου, της διατήρησης οικογενειακής ιστορίας, της πολιτιστικής ταυτότητας και των παραδόσεων. Η πιο πρόσφατη ατομική της έκθεση με τίτλο «Σε χαρτί» πραγματοποιήθηκε το 2018, στο εικαστικό χώρο S:242 στη Λευκωσία όπου παρουσίασε μια σειρά από έργα μεγάλης κλίμακας σε χαρτί. Χαρακτηριστικά στοιχεία της δουλειάς της περιλαμβάνουν τη χρήση πορτραίτου, κειμένου, και άλλων συμβολικών οπτικών εικόνων, που χρησιμοποιούνται σε ένα πλαίσιο χρώματος και συμμετρίας.
