STEM Camp 2025: Shaping Tomorrow’s Girls & Women in Science and Technology

The STEM Camp for girls aged 13–16, organized by Frederick University, was successfully completed for the fourth consecutive year. The camp is part of the University’s long-term campaign to address the underrepresentation of girls and women in STEM fields.

This year’s STEM Camp left participants with smiles, valuable knowledge, and beautiful memories from an experience that boosted their confidence and opened new horizons in the world of science and technology.

The 2025 STEM Camp took place from June 30 to July 4 at Frederick University in Nicosia, welcoming 28 girls to exciting workshops in Architecture/Civil Engineering, Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Robotics. Designed and delivered by members of Frederick University’s academic community, the workshops offered the girls the chance to explore, create, experiment, and problem-solve with ingenuity, analytical thinking, and creativity.

They also had the opportunity to meet the Commissioner for Gender Equality, Ms. Josie Christodoulou, and discuss gender stereotypes, as well as the President of Frederick University’s Council, Ms. Natassa Frederickou, who explained the importance of such initiatives in encouraging young girls to explore future-oriented professions, break stereotypes, and claim their place in Engineering and Technology. The girls also met Ms. Nicoletta Achilleos, Health, Safety, Environmental & Regulatory Advisor at Chevron Cyprus, who shared her personal journey in the engineering world. The camp concluded with a visit to VitaTrace Nutrition Ltd, a company employing women in leadership roles in STEM fields.

The enthusiastic comments of the participants speak volumes about the success and impact of the initiative: “It was fun and super interesting”, “an amazing experience”, “it was wonderful”, “STEM Camp helped us explore STEM careers and I believe it will inspire more girls to enter the field and break stereotypes”, “it was a beautiful experience that enriched me with new knowledge”.

The STEM Camp is part of Frederick University’s campaign “To all women and girls: Join the journey to Engineering and Technology”, which aims to encourage more girls and women into the fields of Technology and Engineering. Recognizing the importance of women’s representation in these sectors and aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the University contributes to the global effort to reduce the gender gap in STEM. It does so by organizing workshops for girls and connecting them with successful women in the field who can serve as role models for all ages. Additionally, Frederick University offers 50% scholarships to all girls who choose to study in its undergraduate programs in the School of Engineering.

The campaign is held under the auspices of the Commissioner for Gender Equality, and part of this specific initiative is funded by the National Mechanism for Women’s Rights.
