DOWNLOAD BROCHUREApproximately 90% of the international trade in goods by volume is currently carried by sea, despite the development of other means of transport. Today’s seas are dotted with oil, cargo and passenger ships that are magnificently huge and complex. Most, if not all countries with strong economies have bustling and modernised ports. It is therefore imperative that stakeholders ensure the safe and efficient operation of ships; any technical failure or human error can cause a delay in shipment arrival dates and affect the business reputation and profit margins, more importantly it can cause precious lives. Moreover, the radical technological developments alongside increased environmental regulations require ship operators and managers with advanced technical as well as leadership and managerial skills and knowledge.
This MSc Programme is unique in Cyprus and one of the few of its type globally. The degree combines marine engineering and management and provides you with the necessary skill set to work in executive posts in the modern maritime and industrial world. It is a major step towards the provision of an integrated approach to engineering and management education. More specifically, the core curriculum covers major marine engineering and management subjects and offers options for specialised shipping and commercial knowledge.
You may also combine this MSc study with the acquisition of the professional international licence of the “Engineer Officer of the Watch" (EOOW) thereby acquiring valuable professional marine qualifications and experience. This attainment is highly regarded by shipping companies.
You can attend and complete the requirements of both the MSc Academic Degree and the EOOW Professional Qualification within a period of approximately 18 months.
The Programme includes, among others, the subjects of:
Fundamentals of Marine Engineering, Marine Mechanical Systems Construction and Maintenance, Marine Electrical Equipment Construction and Maintenance, Ship Performance at Sea and Maritime Safety, Marine Machinery Monitoring and Maintenance Modelling, Commercial Management of Ships, International Maritime Law, Logistics and supply chain management. The aforementioned subjects are at the heart of the Programme and constitute an outstanding curriculum of academic credentials that is useful for any engineer who wishes to specialise in the shipping industry.
A wide range of opportunities, in demanding and challenging posts, is available to prospective graduates. The diversity of the maritime sector and subsector activities (forming the maritime industry), as well as of the world trade and transport includes many hundreds of large, medium and small firms (and many thousands operating internationally) all of them relying in varying degrees upon skilled and versatile professionals. In this context, our Programme has been carefully considered and designed to produce professionally competent and skillful engineers that are able to work at management and executive levels.

It should be noted that the prospects of employment for the graduates of this Programme are excellent as shipping / ship management companies have a high demand for well-educated and trained marine engineers. Cyprus, as an established EU Member, is among the top maritime countries in the world and is already an established maritime and commercial business hub.
The marine engineers are highly favoured for employment in other associated marine industries, such as company superintendents, surveying, insurance and shipbroking. They are also highly favoured for other employment and career paths in industry besides the shipping industry. Amongst many, these include power stations, hospital engineering, and production line engineering.
All those need to be able to draw upon the same pool of well-educated people. It is also worth mentioning that the Programme is unique in Cyprus and one of the few offered worldwide.
The program has been accredited by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CY.Q.A.A.)

1. Comprehend the operation and functions of marine engineering systems
2. Assess and solve operational marine engineering problems in practice
3. Design, analyse and select marine propulsion, auxiliary and transmission systems
4. Design, select and analyse control systems for marine machinery

The prospect of employment for our graduates is high because, especially in Cyprus, transport, shipping and industrial companies have a high demand for well-educated engineers with good managerial skills. Graduates of the MSc in Marine Engineering & Management will have a plethora of career options within the ship owning and ship management sectors; marine engineering firms, offshore oil and gas installations, shipbuilding and repair, port operation, marine consultancy and survey agencies, adjusting, insurance and shipbroking. They are also highly favoured for employment in other career paths, amongst many these include the manufacturing and industrial sectors, energy, construction, mining, logistics, hospitals, hotels and many others.
Links with Professional Bodies / Industry
The Department of Mechanical Engineering as well as the Department of Maritime Transport and Commerce has strong links with employers and professional bodies. Our students have always been encouraged to work during their studies and many of them do. Our Departments have cultivated extensive links with industry and can assist students in obtaining employment. Notable examples include the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, the Cyprus Union of Ship-owners, the Cyprus Shipping Association, the Cyprus Logistics Association, and CYMEPA. Hitherto major employers for our graduates are all the main Ship Management companies, like Marlow, Columbia and Internship, as well as major Ship Owners like Interorient. The Departments have a proven track record of near complete employment of our graduates, with some impressive young managers on their way to very promising careers in international Shipping Industry companies.
The Department of Maritime Transport and Commerce at FU maintains close links with the Institute of Chartered Ship Brokers and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. Our undergraduate Programme secures the maximum number of exemptions to the membership of these organisations.
In the field of Marine Engineering the Department of Maritime Transport and Commerce has established a strong link with the Limassol Branch of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST). The IMarEST is an International Institute based in London. Students are encouraged to join this Institute, which is free to students, and gives access to both local and international bursaries and scholarships.
To enhance the understanding of ship stability, a very important element of ship operation, the University staff have designed and built a static ship model test tank, which is probably unique in Cyprus.
Our Departments have established strong links with several local shipping companies and ship repair facilities, such that visits can be arranged to ships, drydock and repair facilities, to enhance the learning experience. This arrangement has already led to several marine engineering students being offered placements for sea-going experience, required to qualify for the issue of professional licences required by International regulations (STCW) and the Shipping Deputy Ministry (SDM) of Cyprus.
Candidates for a master degree must submit a recognized bachelor degree or qualification deemed to be equivalent to degree level as well as the official transcripts (grade reports) of their first-degree studies. In addition, there could be special requirements for various master programs.
Specific Admission Requirements
A good undergraduate degree from a recognized university or an equivalent international qualification or an acceptable professional qualification. Candidates’ specific minimum academic requirements for admittance to the program are:
-Undergraduate degree in Mechanical or Naval or Electrical Engineering from any recognised University (or appropriate equivalent)
English Language Requirement: If you have completed your entire degree in a non- English-speaking university, you must demonstrate satisfactory knowledge of English language. Suitable qualifications may include:
- TOEFL, IELTS, GCSE, IGCSE, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English or equivalent)
- High school leaving certificate from a High School where the language of instruction is English or
- Α pass (50%) at the English Placement Test of our University
Candidates, who have completed university graduate level work in an accredited program at an institution other than Frederick University, are eligible to apply for transfer admission. Such candidates should, along with their application form, submit the official transcripts (grade reports) and syllabi (course descriptions) for all graduate level work completed. Transcripts are evaluated by the relevant Department to determine the number of credits to be transferred in accordance with the Frederick University curriculum requirements and the candidate's academic performance.
There are no specific examination regulations, assessment and grading methods employed by this Program. The examination regulations, assessment methods and grading system for this Program are the same as the relevant general university regulations.
Graduation Requirements
Students are eligible for graduation after successfully completing 90 ECTS credits in the courses listed in the Program Structure.
Furthermore, a student can graduate only if their CGPA is greater or equal to 5.00 out of 10.00. Graduating students with a CGPA less than 5.00 might have to take extra courses or repeat a number of courses in order to improve their grades.
Access to Further Studies
The graduates of the Program have access to doctoral programmes (PhD) in disciplines related with Management or Engineering.
