Women’s representation in Engineering, Science and Technology is crucial for the reduction of the gender gap in these areas.

Did you know that only 30% of all researchers in the world are women? Or that in the 120 years of the Nobel Prizes in medicine, physics and chemistry, prizes were awarded 599 times to men and 23 times to women?

Despite the global effort to encourage girls and women to choose studies related to Engineering, Science and Technology, their involvement in these areas remains disproportionate. This means that women are excluded from the sectors with the highest growth; the sectors that present excellent employment prospects. By 2030, it is estimated that 40-160 million women will need to change careers and take on roles that require more sophisticated digital skills. If women do not make the necessary transition to technology and science, they will not have access to the job market and will be disproportionately affected by unemployment.

Girls and women have an important role to play in these fields, due to their diverse perceptions, experiences, and ideas. The equal representation of boys and girls in Engineering, Technology and Science will contribute to achieving a healthier planet and a fairer, more peaceful world, with health, security and prosperity, a world that is above all sustainable, a world that meets the needs not only of today’s generation but also of future generations. The campaign “To all women and girls: Join the journey in Engineering and Technology” is part of the integration of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into Frederick University’s Strategic Planning with the aim of achieving a better future for all, and is implemented by ENAF (Equality and Awareness @Frederick), the University’s Center on Gender Issues, Diversity & Equality and the University’s School of Engineering.

50% Scholarships on All Undergraduate Programs in the School of Engineering

At Frederick University, we are committed to promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls to reach their full potential.

In line with this commitment, we offer scholarships to all female students who enrol in Engineering and Technology programs at the undergraduate level within our School of Engineering. These scholarships cover 50% of the tuition fees for the first academic year, with the possibility of renewal based on the student’s academic performance at the University.

Our goal is to encourage more female students to pursue careers in engineering and technology, helping to eliminate barriers and stereotypes in these traditionally male-dominated fields. We believe that by providing this support, we can foster a more inclusive and diverse learning environment that uplifts women and enables all students to reach their full potential.

This initiative aligns with our targeted recruitment and admissions strategies, as well as our positive discrimination measures, aimed at increasing access to education for students from underrepresented and vulnerable groups.

Mentoring and Support

Female students in the School of Engineering, as an underrepresented group, can benefit from structured support schemes such as tailored counselling services and guidance by experienced female mentors. These services enable them to build resilience and confidence and support their well-being and academic success.

 

The campaign is held under the auspices of the Cyprus Commissioner for Gender Equality, Ms Jozi Christodoulou.

«When I decided to study Civil Engineering, it was hard for my father to accept it. He always thought it was a “man’s job”. He argued that this was not a profession for a woman and believed that it would be difficult for me to cope in a male-dominated environment. Initially I did face discrimination in my job because of my gender and my age. I found myself in construction sites, among men who worked in the field for years. Today I work in a large contractor’s company and since December 2017 I am the President of Larnaca-Famagusta District Council of the Cyprus Association of Civil Engineers.»
