Overview

The Networks Research Laboratory (NETLAB) conducts significant research in the prominent areas of Wired, Mobile/Wireless Computer Networks and Communication Systems. NETLAB performs research in network architectures, communication protocols, intelligent algorithms and mechanisms that support the provision of Quality of Service/Experience and security.

The NETLAB team has been actively conducting research for more than a decade on computer networks and communication systems that includes 5G/6G networks, Internet of Things (IoT), Intrusion detection systems, Cloud/Fog/Edge computing, Computational intelligence, and Multi-objective optimization. The research team consists of two faculty members, three PhD students, visiting postdoctoral and research fellows, and many BSc/MSc students. NETLAB has also several internal and external collaborators from academic/research institutions.

NETLAB’s research interests include but not limited to the following topics:
- Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS)-aided Cell-free 6G Networks
- Device-to-Device (D2D) and cooperative multi-hop D2D communication in 5G-and-beyond networks for energy and spectrum efficiency, with energy harvesting capabilities for public safety networks
- Multi-objective optimization of radio resource allocation and beamforming for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) in software defined networking (SDN) based virtualized fog computing radio access networks in 5G-and-beyond wireless environments
- Blockchain technology in communication networks
- Secure mobility management in maritime IoT applications
- Privacy-perseverance and security framework for the Healthcare IoT systems
- Machine learning intrusion detection and recovery techniques in IoT
- Intelligent code-offloading on edge computing-based IoT
- Mobility support in wireless sensor networks and intelligent, QoS-aware mechanisms in vehicular ad hoc networks
- Computational and network communication resource constraints handling in IoT
- Multimedia content delivery on bandwidth-limited networks
- Application of computer networking principles and techniques in the field of high-performance computer architecture (network-on-chip architectures)

The NETLAB’s research is supported by the utilization of CISCO equipment and software tools for the development of appropriate simulation models and pilot systems and applications. In addition, NETLAB utilizes prototyping and proof-of-concept implementations. Specifically, NETLAB’s equipment includes two cabinets - rack mounted CISCO routers and switches, a structured internal computer network for pilot applications, and several testbed workstations.
