Dr. Maria Athanasekou

Dr Maria Athanasekou completed a PhD in art history at the School of Architecture, National Technical University of Athens, an MA in Renaissance Studies at the University of London, Birkbeck College and a BA in Archaeology and History of Art at the National University of Athens. Currently, she is completing her post doc research at the University of Western Macedonia on Art and Education policy. She teaches at the Master’s Programme on Special Education, at Frederick University, Cyprus, the module DLSPE 511 “Art as a therapeutic means in Special Education” and in the past the module DLSPE501 “Contemporary trends in Special and general education. Theory and research”. In the past, among other institutions, she taught at the National Technical University of Salonica, the University of Western Macedonia, the School of Architecture, Athens etc. She has also delivered papers in a number of international conferences which have been published and contributed with chapters to books, as well as having published two e-books on art and education. She has edited and co written the book “Why art concerns me” (Γιατί με αφορά η τέχνη, Ηδυέπεια, 2020) and has also written the book “Pandemics: Art and Society” (Πανδημία: Τέχνη και Κοινωνία Ηδυέπεια, 2020). Co -authored with Alexandros Argyriadis she has published the book: «A concise approach to Modernism in art: Cultural moments of the history and theory of art». Available on Amazon, 2020, etc. Her research revolves around art, therapy, (special) education and in her teaching as well as her books she attempts an interdisciplinary approach combining elements from the humanities based on art. She likes telling art stories, to share and communicate through images.

Η Δρ Μαρία Αθανασέκου είναι Ιστορικός Τέχνης και διδάσκει το μάθημα «Η Τέχνη ως θεραπευτικό μέσο στην Ειδική Εκπαίδευση», DLSPE511, στο μεταπτυχιακό πρόγραμμα Ειδικής Αγωγής του Πανεπιστημίου Frederick. Διδάσκει σε πανεπιστημιακές σχολές, δίνει διαλέξεις για θέματα Ιστορίας Τέχνης και τη διασύνδεσή τους με την εκπαίδευση και τη θεραπεία, σε ποικίλους φορείς. Συμμετέχει με ανακοινώσεις σε διεθνή συνέδρια, άρθρα της έχουν δημοσιευτεί σε επιστημονικά περιοδικά, έχει γράψει κεφάλαια σε βιβλία, έχουν εκδοθεί βιβλία της σε έντυπη μορφή και ηλεκτρονική. Τα επιστημονικά της ενδιαφέροντα είναι πολλά και τα συνδυάζει πάντα με γνώμονα την τέχνη, τη θεραπεία και την εκπαίδευση. Έχει μετεκπαιδεύσεις και επιμορφώσεις στην Εικαστική Θεραπεία, το Παιδικό Ιχνογράφημα, Διαπολιτισμική Εκπαίδευση, Digital Education, την Ειδική Αγωγή, Ψυχολογία, Νευροψυχολογία, Λαογραφία κ.α., και είναι πιστοποιημένη εκπαιδεύτρια ενηλίκων. Η προσέγγιση της στην τέχνη είναι διαθεματική καθώς δανείζεται από αδερφές επιστήμες (όπως η Ανθρωπολογία, Ψυχολογία, Λαογραφία, Κοινωνιολογία, κ.α.) φιλοδοξώντας και ελπίζοντας τη δημιουργία σχέσης των φοιτητών/εκπαιδευόμενων με την τέχνη. Της αρέσει να αφηγείται ιστορίες της τέχνης, να μοιράζεται και να επικοινωνεί μέσω της εικόνας. Πιστεύει ότι η τέχνη έχει μεγάλη δύναμη και ιστορίες να μας πει, πολλές, αν όχι όλες, μας αφορούν ή θα μας αφορούν σε κάποια από τις περιόδους της ζωής μας, όσο διευρύνεται το υπαρξιακό μας πεδίο.
