Prof. George Demosthenous is the Rector of Frederick University and the Director of the UNESCO Chair for Lifelong Learning and Adult Education. Since 2015 he is member of the Council of the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CY.Q.A.A), appointed by the Council of Ministers.

George Demosthenous obtained the Diploma of Mechanical Engineering (Dipl.-Eng) and a Doctorate Diploma (PhD) from the National Technical University of Athens (Ethnicon  Metsovion  Polytechnion). Throughout his studies he was supported by scholarships provided by the Republic of Cyprus and the State Scholarships Foundation of Greece, and has obtained numerous distinctions and awards. He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Cyprus and other international scientific societies such as ASME, IMechE, SME, and SAE.

With the establishment of Frederick University in 2007, he has been appointed as Professor in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and has been elected to the post of the Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department (2007-2008) and at the post of the Vice Rector (2008-2011). Between 2011 and 2013 he served as Minister of Education and Culture. During his ministerial tenure, he was the President of the Ministers Council of the European Commission. He served also as President of the Cyprus Rectors’ Conference (2017-2020) and President of the Foundation for the Management for the European Lifelong Learning Programmes (2010-2011).

His scientific work mainly focuses in the domains of Manufacturing Processes, Engineering Design, Lifelong Learning, In-Formal and Non-Formal Education, fields in which he has developed a rich body of work with publications in esteemed international academic journals and international conference proceedings and execution of many funded research projects as scientific coordinator and/or principal investigator.
