Prof. George Demosthenous

Short CV

George Demosthenous is the Rector of Frederick University and an ex-officio member of the University Council. Since 2007, he has been a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering within the School of Engineering of the University. He has served as the first Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Vice-Rector of the University, as well as Secretary of the Steering Committee of the University. He is the Director of the UNESCO Chair for Lifelong Learning and Adult Education and a member of the Governing Board of EU-Conexus, the European University for Smart Urban Coastal Sustainability. Prof. Demosthenous earned both his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (a five-year Integrated Master's) and his Doctorate (PhD) from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He has provided both independent and auxiliary instructional work at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), the Higher Technical Institute (HTI), the TEI of Piraeus, and the Frederick Institute of Technology. During his studies, he was awarded scholarships by the Republic of Cyprus and the State Scholarships Foundation of Greece, alongside receiving numerous awards and distinctions. He has been honored by international and national organizations. He is a member of the Scientific and Technical Chamber of Cyprus and other international scientific organizations. Between 2011 and 2013, he served as the Minister of Education and Culture of Cyprus. During the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2012, he chaired the EU Council of Ministers for Education, Culture, Youth, and Sport. Since 2023, he has been a member of the Advisory Council tasked with evaluating and submitting recommendations for the selection of members of the Boards of Directors of Public Law Entities. He served as President of the Cyprus Rectors' Conference (2017–2019). Prof. Demosthenous served as a member of the first Council of the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (2015–2020), President of the Foundation for the Management of European Lifelong Learning Programmes (2010–2011), and representative of Cyprus to the COST EU Committee for Materials, Physics, and Nanotechnology (2006–2010). His research work focuses on Manufacturing Processes, Engineering Design, Vehicle Crashworthiness, and Road Safety System Design. He has published over 100 papers in esteemed international scientific journals and conference proceedings, authored 2 scientific books, and led more than 20 funded research projects as project coordinator and/or principal investigator. He has served as a member of organizing and scientific committees for international conferences, a reviewer for scientific journals and competitions, and a member of dozens of electoral boards in Cyprus and abroad for the election and academic promotion of faculty members.

Ο Γιώργος Δημοσθένους είναι ο Πρύτανης του Πανεπιστημίου Frederick και ex-officio μέλος του Συμβουλίου του Πανεπιστημίου. Από το 2007 είναι Καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Μηχανολόγων Μηχανικών της Πολυτεχνικής Σχολής του Πανεπιστημίου. Υπηρέτησε ως πρώτος Πρόεδρος του Τμήματος Μηχανολόγων Μηχανικών, Αντιπρύτανης του Πανεπιστημίου, καθώς και Γραμματέας της Διοικούσας Επιτροπής του Πανεπιστημίου. Είναι Διευθυντής της Έδρας UNESCO για τη Δια Βίου Μάθηση και την Εκπαίδευση Ενηλίκων και μέλος του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου Πρυτάνεων του EU-Conexus, του Ευρωπαϊκού Πανεπιστημίου για την Ευφυή Αειφόρο Ανάπτυξη των Αστικών Παρακτίων Ζωνών. Ο Καθ. Δημοσθένους έλαβε τόσο το Δίπλωμα Μηχανολόγου Μηχανικού (πενταετές Integrated Master) όσο και το Διδακτορικό Δίπλωμα (PhD) από το Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο (ΕΜΠ). Παρείχε αυτοδύναμο ή και επικουρικό διδακτικό έργο στο ΕΜΠ, στο ΑΤΙ, στο ΤΕΙ Πειραιά και στο Frederick Institute of Technology. Κατά τη διάρκεια των σπουδών του έλαβε υποτροφίες από την Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία και το Ίδρυμα Κρατικών Υποτροφιών της Ελλάδας ενώ έλαβε σειρά βραβείων και διακρίσεων. Έχει τιμηθεί από διεθνείς και εθνικούς Οργανισμούς. Είναι μέλος του Επιστημονικού Τεχνικού Επιμελητηρίου Κύπρου και άλλων διεθνών επιστημονικών οργανισμών. Μεταξύ 2011 και 2013, διετέλεσε Υπουργός Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού της Κύπρου. Κατά τη διάρκεια της Κυπριακής Προεδρίας του Συμβουλίου της ΕΕ το 2012, προήδρευσε των Συμβουλίων Υπουργών της ΕΕ για την Παιδεία, τον Πολιτισμό, τη Νεολαία και τον Αθλητισμό. Από το 2023 είναι μέλος του Γνωμοδοτικού Συμβουλίου που έχει ως αποστολή την αξιολόγηση και την υποβολή εισηγήσεων για την επιλογή των μελών των Διοικητικών Συμβουλίων των Νομικών Προσώπων Δημοσίου Δικαίου (ΝΠΔΔ). Διετέλεσε Πρόεδρος της Συνόδου των Πρυτάνεων των Κυπριακών Πανεπιστημίων (2017–2019). Ο Καθ. Δημοσθένους υπηρέτησε ως μέλος του πρώτου Συμβουλίου του Φορέα Διασφάλισης και Πιστοποίησης της Ποιότητας της Ανώτερης Εκπαίδευσης (ΔΙΠΑΕ) της Κύπρου (2015-2020), Πρόεδρος του Ιδρύματος Διαχείρισης Ευρωπαϊκών Προγραμμάτων Διά Βίου Μάθησης (2010–2011) και εκπρόσωπος της Κύπρου στην Επιτροπή COST της ΕΕ για τα Υλικά, τη Φυσική και τις Νανοτεχνολογίες (2006–2010). Το ερευνητικό του έργο επικεντρώνεται στις Κατεργασίες Υλικών, τον Σχεδιασμό Μηχανολογικών Κατασκευών, την Παθητική Ασφάλεια Οχημάτων (Vehicle Crashworthiness) και τον Σχεδιασμό Συστημάτων Οδικής Ασφάλειας. Έχει δημοσιεύσει πέραν των 100 εργασιών σε έγκριτα διεθνή επιστημονικά περιοδικά και συνέδρια, είναι συγγραφέας 2 επιστημονικών βιβλίων και συντονιστής ή/και επιστημονικός υπεύθυνος σε περισσότερα από 20 χρηματοδοτούμενα ερευνητικά έργα. Έχει συμμετάσχει ως μέλος οργανωτικών και επιστημονικών επιτροπών διεθνών συνεδρίων, αξιολογητής σε επιστημονικά περιοδικά και διαγωνισμούς και ως μέλος δεκάδων εκλεκτορικών σωμάτων σε Κύπρο και εξωτερικό για την εκλογή και ανέλιξη μελών του ακαδημαϊκού προσωπικού.
