Overview
The Architectural Technology Research Unit was established to promote mainly the research and implementation of contemporary light structures (wood and steel). The activity of the Unit includes the training of, mainly young, architects and civil engineers on the characteristics, properties, pathology and capabilities of wood and steel as a basic building material, the systematic recording of the proper methodology and the general principles of light construction design and the definition of a framework for appropriate technical implementation of light structures. Important parameters of the research are the role of light structures in the effort to prevent climate change, their bioclimatic character and ways to strengthen it, their low energy footprint and their excellent anti-seismic properties.
The Unit's main activities include:
- Promoting research and training of architects and civil engineers in the characteristics, properties, pathology and capabilities of wood and steel as a basic building material
- Research on light construction design principles
- Research on the sustainable and bioclimatic properties of light structures
- Research on the anti-seismic properties of light structures and the principles of the anti-seismic design
- Research on the properties and capabilities of light constructions in the areas of fire safety and sound insulation.
