DOWNLOAD BROCHUREThe “MEd in Educational Studies: Curriculum & Instruction” aims at providing effective teaching and quality learning experiences and opportunities to all students and prepare teachers and researchers who can respond to the increasing complexity of the educational and social environment, and consider curriculum concepts, teaching, learning, assessment, as well as their interactions at macro-level and/or micro-level in a critical and comprehensive manner. The Program will help students acquire the necessary background in the current trends of curriculum and instruction that support creativity and innovation in a socially meaningful way, social and educational agency, and the organization of powerful learning environments, conducive to interdisciplinarity. In this way graduates of the Program can contribute as productive participants in the field of education and fully meet the needs of today’s as well as tomorrow’s social reality. For that purpose, this MEd Program offers a strong theoretical and methodological background in the Curriculum Studies, as well as Content Areas in the framework of Curriculum Studies. Particularly, the structure of this Program offers the opportunity of exploring and acquiring deep knowledge of the pedagogical, educational, social, as well as innovation- and creativity-related aspects of Curriculum Studies. At the same time, it offers the opportunity to focus Curriculum Studies within a wide range of Content Areas: Creative Writing in Education, Educational Technology, Visual Arts and Theatre, Visual Arts and Theatre, Mathematics Education, Sociocultural Aspects and Language Teaching. Great emphasis is given on the students’ cognitive development and the use of different teaching methods, procedures and tools, appropriate for the different thinking, cognitive and learning styles. Finally, the Program aims at equipping its students with advanced research skills and promotes research in the field of education especially in teaching methodology, interdisciplinarity and the social and pedagogical dimensions of education.
The language of instruction is Greek.
1. Identify and analyse the structural elements of a curriculum and the different models of curriculum development
2. Discuss the philosophical foundations and historically- and socially-situated perspectives of curriculum
3. Critically examine the interconnection between curriculum, instruction and evaluation
4. Differentiate between various educational methods, teaching strategies, and approaches, their theory and praxis
5. Evaluate a broad spectrum of educational methods, teaching strategies, and approaches as they apply in various educational contexts (formal, non-formal and informal)
6. Apply a wide range of teaching methods, techniques and methodological approaches in order to be able to integrate various social issues in education
7. Develop innovative curriculum and teaching materials. Use effective techniques for developing research programs within accepted ethical research guidelines
8. Harness the potentials and tap diverse (re)sources of learning that emerge in the postmodern, information era in all aspects of life
9. Engage in critical study of educational policy, of curricular, instructional, and evaluation actions, programs or activities implemented in schools at school and their role in improving learning
10. Use different forms of curriculum inquiry to understand in depth and breadth various issues in education, including ethical, sociocultural, historical, political etc.
11. Employ the results of educational research (or research conducted in related scientific fields) in curriculum, instruction, and evaluation, and in society in general
12. Develop advanced research skills in educational issues, and efficiency design and control of intervention programmes coping with challenging situations in the field of education
The Programme is addressed to teachers of all levels (pre-primary, primary, secondary education, technical professional education) and settings (formal, informal and non-formal education), of public and private education, but also to any individual involved with training. The five Content or Focus Areas of the programme address the postgraduate students who are particularly interested in creative writing in education, educational technology, visual arts and theatre, mathematics education, and sociocultural aspects in language teaching. The graduates of the Program will have the knowledge and skills required for the design and implementation of educational programmes with emphasis on educational innovation and creativity, and on interdisciplinary values. The graduates are expected to acquire the knowledge and expertise to act as hubs for education for the construction of powerful learning environments in their schools, or to be assigned consulting or curriculum development duties by educational authorities.
Students admitted to the programme are expected to hold a Bachelor Degree from an accredited University either in education, in humanities and social sciences. Also they are expected to be fluent in Greek and English.
Recognition of Prior Learning
There are no specific arrangements for recognition of prior learning for this Program. Candidates can be granted transfer credits according to the general arrangements for recognition of prior learning of the University.
There are no specific examination regulations, assessment and grading methods employed by this Program. The examination regulations, assessment methods and grading system for this Program are the same as the relevant general university regulations.
Graduation Requirements
Students are eligible for graduation after successfully completing 90 ECTS credits in the courses listed in the Program Structure.
Furthermore, a student can graduate only if their CGPA is greater or equal to 5.00 out of 10.00.
Graduating students with a CGPA less than 5.00 might have to take extra courses or repeat a number of courses in order to improve their grades.
Access to Further Studies
The graduates of the Program have access to doctoral programmes (3rd Cycle) in disciplines related with education.
