Lecture by Dr. Panos Leventis on the street art of Beirut, Nicosia and Jerusalem

Visiting Professor at the Department of Architecture Dr. Panos Leventis will give a lecture titled "Recoloring the Green Lines: Urban Identity and Street Art in Beirut, Jerusalem, and Nicosia", on Wednesday November 20th, at Frederick University, Nicosia.

The lecture is co-organized by our University's Department of Architecture and the Cyprus Architects Association.

Dr. Panos Leventis is a Professor of Architecture at the Hammons School of Architecture at Drury University, USA, and a Visiting Professor at our University's Department of Architecture. Nicosia, Beirut, and Jerusalem are key examples in his research, which focuses on graffiti art, street art, and urban resistance movements as participatory urban processes. These three cities have continuously been experienced as fragmented urban landscapes of conflict, with opposing sides in their urban fabrics coexisting with difficulty, often engaged in hostilities even today.

In recent decades, alternative voices through creative street art initiatives have woven unifying urban and cultural narratives. During his lecture, Dr. Leventis will interpret examples of street art found or located near or within the "Green Lines" of the three cities-zones that separate linguistic/religious groups and conflicting factions, further dividing and fragmenting urban space. He will also highlight the complementary but significant role of the architectural framework in communicating the messages conveyed by these examples to the public.

The event will be addressed by Professor Byron Ioannou, Head of the Department of Architecture, and Mr. Alkis Dikaios, President of the Cyprus Architects Association and a member of the Special Teaching Staff at Frederick University. Following the lecture, there will be a discussion with the audience and a reception.
