Feminization of Poverty – A Collaboration Between Frederick University Students and the Association of Single-Parent Families and Friends
Frederick University’s Department of Arts and Communication collaborated with the Pancyprian Association of Single-Parent Families and Friends, a non-profit organization that advocates for the protection and well-being of single-parent families, to create the Association’s 2025 Calendar, focusing on the theme of the feminization of poverty and its impact on children.
Students from the Visual Communication and Fashion and Image Design programs, under the guidance of Ms. Hourig Torosian, instructor of the Image Making Processes II course, worked for 13 weeks exploring female poverty, investigating its contributing factors, and analyzing its effects on women and their children. They then produced the creative illustrations and designs featured in the calendar. This initiative was carried out within the framework of Frederick University’s Living Lab (FULL) pedagogical program, which emphasizes a student-centered approach to learning and teaching.
An exhibition titled “Feminine Poverty” was recently inaugurated, showcasing the students’ works. The exhibition was organized jointly by the Association of Single-Parent Families and Friends and Frederick University, and was hosted at the Panos Solomonides Cultural Center in Limassol. The opening ceremony was officiated by Ms. Josie Christodoulou, Commissioner for Gender Equality, alongside Ms. Argentoula Ioannou, President of the Association, and Ms. Natassa Frederickou, President of the Council of Frederick University. Students Haifaa Abdulaal, Andrianti Andreou and Filippos Tymvios were awarded for their works during the exhibition opening.
The calendar is available for sale, with proceeds supporting vulnerable single-parent families. The initiative aims to raise awareness of female poverty, making the issue both visible and relatable, while also educating students and the public about the challenges faced by single-parent families.
