Educating youth on clean energy and energy efficiency
Frederick University is committed to engaging the local community, particularly young people, in understanding the importance of energy efficiency, renewable energy, and clean energy solutions and their role in building a more sustainable future.
Photovoltaics workshop in the Career Discovery Program
As part of its actions to raise awareness about energy efficiency and clean energy within the local community and empower the younger generation, the University has dedicated a workshop within its Career Discovery Program to these topics. In February 2025 and November 2025 secondary school pupils learned about renewable energy solutions and observed the use of photovoltaics in electricity production, thus exploring their role in clean electricity production and the transition towards a more sustainable energy system.
The Career Discovery Program engages more than 100 secondary school pupils twice a year through interactive, hands-on workshops that introduce them to a wide range of professions and fields of study.
Clean energy component in Summer School
Frederick University has also incorporated a dedicated section on renewable energy into its annual Summer School program for local pupils.
During this year’s Summer School, held from 2 to 6 June 2025, pupils participated in a range of educational activities focused on clean energy and energy efficiency, during which they learned about various renewable energy sources and observed the use of photovoltaics in electricity production. They also took part in an interactive, hands-on workshop, where they were instructed by academic staff from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering & Informatics and carried out calculations based on real-world conditions. They also discussed energy-saving strategies, smart energy management, and reducing energy consumption. The program further included a visit to the Ayia Anna Wind Farm, where pupils had the opportunity to observe wind turbine operations and the production of wind energy.
Frederick University’s Summer School takes place annually in June and is attended by more than 80 pupils from Technical Schools across Cyprus. During the program, participants spend a week at the University’s campuses in Nicosia and Limassol, experiencing campus life, exploring various fields of study, and strengthening the University’s connection with the local community through education and engagement in sustainability-focused initiatives.
