Frederick University to contribute to the regeneration of refugee housing estates in Strovolos

Frederick University and the Municipality of Strovolos signed a Memorandum of Understanding on November 26th, aimed at strengthening their long-term collaboration. The Memorandum was signed by Professor George Demosthenous, and the Mayor of Strovolos, Mr. Stavros Stavrinides.
The collaboration includes the implementation of joint actions in areas related to the protection of the natural and built environment, green transition, climate neutrality, and urban resilience, as well as support for the development of studies on public spaces, sustainable urban mobility, and the energy, environmental, social, and aesthetic regeneration of areas of special character and/or buildings.

An important aspect of the partnership is the expertise that the University will offer regarding studies by the Municipality of Strovolos for the regeneration of refugee housing estates located within the municipal boundaries. For this purpose, the University will provide scientific support through the School of Engineering Departments of Civil Engineering, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Informatics, as well as the Department of Arts and Communication. The Memorandum also includes the provision of scholarships for residents of the Municipality of Strovolos.

“The long-standing cooperation we have always had with the municipal authorities of Strovolos is formalized with the signing of this Memorandum,” said the Rector of Frederick University, Professor Demosthenous. “As an academic and research institution, we have significant research activities in areas such as building conservation and restoration, bioclimatic design, the regeneration and development of smart cities through innovative applications and modern aesthetics. We are ready to offer our expertise and knowledge in these areas that directly concern the Municipality of Strovolos and share best practices for the development of sustainable cities, for the benefit of all.”

The Mayor of Strovolos, Mr. Stavros Stavrinides, emphasized: “The Municipality of Strovolos is currently the third largest municipality in Cyprus, and we are pleased to collaborate with one of the country’s most important academic institutions, to the benefit of our residents. Universities are breeding grounds for brilliant scientists, and we need their innovation and knowledge to create conditions and opportunities for improving the quality of life for all citizens, without exception.”

The signing ceremony was attended by Mr. Athanasios Kolyvas, Municipal Engineer of Strovolos, Professor Michael Komodromos, Vice-Rector for Research, Development, and International Relations, Mr Alexis Onoufriou, Director of the University’s Research and Interconnection Service, Dr Petros Christou, Director of the Department of Civil Engineering, Dr Demetris Nicolaidese, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, and postdoctoral researcher Dr. George Xekalakis.
