The enforcement of the European Directives on the Liberalization of the Electricity and Natural Gas Markets, on the promotion of green, environmentally friendly technologies to convert sustainable energy resources, as well as on the energy efficiency of buildings and systems provides, for the first time, a set of integrated regulatory tools, towards a holistic approach of energy use, considering energy, environmental and economic parameters of energy policies and their implementation. Also Cyprus is anticipated in the following years to become an energy hub in the southern Europe and the MENA region, through the exploitation of its off-shore conventional energy resources. The master’s degree in Energy Engineering is a taught multi-disciplinary international programme suitable for applicants from engineering, architecture, planning and other relevant backgrounds. It is intended to investigate the latest design developments not only in the international scientific field, but also in the European and national regulatory and legal framework. Students will be acquainted with the required knowhow for monitoring and evaluating the energy efficiency of building systems, buildings, renewable and conventional energy systems including Oil & Gas, and of indoor environmental quality conditions, in accordance to legal and best-practice requirements, so as to be able to focus on the field of energy engineering. The programme consists of two specializations:
(1) Sustainable Energy Resources
(2) Sustainable Built Environment

The main objectives of the programme are:
a) tο help students develop detailed knowledge and critical understanding of the core skills in rational use of energy resources, conventional (oil & gas) and renewable, in the power generation and in the building sector
b) to prepare the students in the fields of energy production, rationale energy management,
c) to educate students in the energy design of buildings and in achieving high energy efficiency of new and existing buildings;
d) to support students to obtain an in-depth comprehension of the economics of energy, including the security of supply aspects, environmental costs and other externalities;
e) to assist students to develop detailed knowledge on the environmental assessment of performance of buildings and power production sites;
f) to provide to the students the expertise demanded by the necessity to implement the range of European Directives and national legislative acts in the energy and building sector and in the efficient use of conventional and renewable energy resources;
g) to educate students in the use of advanced computational tools in the field of sustainable energy, such as Building Energy Performance Tools (BEPs), Building Information Modelling Tools (BIM) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
h) to assist students to critically review existing practice and develop original and creative solutions to problems within the energy sector and the domain addressed by the programme, incorporating the marketing approach in order to capitalize on the solutions developed;
i) to provide to the students the conditions to communicate and work effectively with peers and academic staff in a variety of tasks, demonstrating appropriate levels of autonomy and responsibility.

With the completion of the Programme the students are expected to:

1. Become familiar with the content and philosophy of the European and Cypriot legislative framework on the field of energy and to understand the processes and factors that lead to its development;
2. Understand the contemporary global, regional and local energy issues and develop systemic, critical and creative thinking about their impact on economic activities;
3. Acquire skills and experiences necessary for engineers who will lead the fields Oil & Gas extraction, processing, storage and exploitation in efficient and clean power generation technologies, of rational use of energy, of renewable energy systems, of energy design of buildings and of evaluating and improving a building's energy performance;
4. Become familiar with the procedures, instrumentation and analysis needed to enforce pertinent legislation, enhance the issuance of energy-related certification, and better facilitate the environ-mental labelling procedure and perform feasibility analysis;
5. Be able to use effectively state-of-the-art software tools for energy design of buildings, for dynamic simulation of the building's performance, for the evaluation of thermal comfort and indoor air quality conditions and for the optimization of sustainable energy systems' selection and sizing;
6. Become familiar with the processes followed for the development of energy, environmental and sustainability policies;
7. Be able to gather information about the main local and international funding opportunities for improving the energy efficiency of residential, commercial and public buildings and infrastructure;
8. Obtain the necessary knowledge background so that they can become chartered in the professional chambers and association;
9. Be capable of using research results in education, within their professional environments and in society.
The Programme is designed to stimulate and encourage novel and imaginative solutions with respect to their implementation in a real market and a rapidly developing economic environment, surrounding the energy sector and the built environment. The Programme involves theoretical and hands-on learning methods aiming at producing skilled professionals who will be able to effectively enter the competitive European market of energy experts. Graduates of the program acquire a strong qualification that assists them in the professional progress.

The degree greatly enhances the employability of our graduates in public and semi-public organisations, whose work is related to the implementation of energy and environment related legislation and to the operation of the energy market, or in the power generation, the construction and the building materials industries.

The implementation of the Energy Performance Directive in Buildings in 2010 in Cyprus was followed by the increasing demand for more energy efficient buildings, which at the same time ensure a high level of indoor environmental quality. Buildings have to be characterized by the respective energy and environmental studies and certifications and this sets new challenges for engineers and architects, opening at the same time new professional opportunities in the European market for energy professionals. Further, in light of the new developments of oil & gas exploration in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus, and the immediate needs of providing skilled engineers to support the whole planning and operation, the Degree will allow our Graduates to first penetrate the area and become leaders in this effort.
Student Admission Requirements:
According to the University’s regulations candidates for a master degree must submit a recognized bachelor degree or qualification deemed to be equivalent to degree level, in the areas of Engineering, Enviromental and/or natural sciences, as well as the official transcripts (grade reports) of their first-degree studies.
