The aim of the Department Recognising the imperative need for specialising scientists in undertaking responsibly and methodically the preservation, protection and promotion of the unique monumental wealth of Cyprus, Frederick University offers a Postgraduate Program which aims at educating scientists of different specialisations in this field. This is a highly concise and practical program geared towards providing the state-of-the-art skills necessary for immediate entering or re-entering practice at the highest level.

The aim of the program is to fully instruct students not only in the theories of the deontology and methodology concerning the protection and restoration of historical buildings, but also in the practices regarding materials and technologies, which are nowadays internationally applied in restoration projects. The program also aims to provide further technical knowledge in the area of conservation and restoration of historical structures and monuments and it is intended to provide the educational platform to encourage the development of competent, confident and inquisitive postgraduates who are able to link restoration and conservation theory with practice.

Through the process of close examination and identification of the subject-matter, the students acquire the necessary assets allowing them to formulate compatible proposals for repairing, reinforcing, restoring or even changing the use of a historical building. The successful completion of the program requires also the submission of a research paper and a master’s thesis, covering a topic related to conservation and restoration of monuments or other relevant historical structures.

The language of instruction is Greek.

Upon successful completion of this program, the students should be able to:
1. Recognise a building structure in terms of its historical period, building type, typological and morphological identity.
2. Obtain an in depth comprehension of the methodology of historical documentation of a structure.
3. Acquire the ability and skills to search and index historical resources.
4. Develop detailed knowledge on building analysis, recording of pathology and vulnerability of monuments.
5. Organize and implement visual and instrumental valuation of the typical types of pathology of various types of historical buildings.
6. Analyse and evaluate the dynamic and earthquake behaviour of historical monuments and structures.
7. Provide further knowledge of conservation principles and develop an ability to interpret and evaluate restoration problems.
8. Plan and execute a significant project of research, investigation or development within the context of conservation and restoration of historical buildings.
9. Obtain an in depth knowledge of the World, European and National regulatory and legal framework, concerning the protection and restoration of monuments.
10. Provide the scientific background for further studies or research.
11. Critically review existing practice and develop original and creative solutions to problems.
12. Study in depth the relevant materials technology, masonry engineering and static and anti-seismic analysis of the typical types of built monuments found in the eastern Mediterranean region.
13. Communicate and work effectively with peers and academic staff in a variety of tasks, demonstrating appropriate levels of autonomy and responsibility.

The MSc in Conservation and Restoration of Historical Structures and Monuments is developed to meet the needs for education in the field of conservation and restoration, by providing the skills needed to key professionals, who are or will be active in the private sector, in governmental institutions and local authorities and as consultant engineers.

The Program is addressed to public sector officers and professional architects, civil engineers, topographers, archaeologists and historians. Lessons take place in the afternoons so that working students can attend.

Specifically, the proposed program will provide the skills for:
- Scientists in related fields, who have recently completed their undergraduate studies and seek a higher and focused education before entering the market.
- Graduates who have recently completed their studies in a related discipline and seek to get involved in research and acquire an MSc before pursuing a PhD degree.
- Scientists who wish to engage in consulting in conservation and restoration of historical structures and monuments.
- Professionals with experience in the field, who wish to extend their knowledge and place emphasis on the topics covered by the programme.
- Professionals from public and semi-public organisations, whose work is related to restoration and conservation of monuments and the relevant legislation.

The graduates of the program, equipped with the epistemology and experience acquired in the field of Conservation and Restoration of Historical Structures and Monuments will be able to work in the private sector undertaking specialised projects, and in the public sector, in the antiquities department, town planning and housing department, public works department, the technical services of ministries, the technical departments of district administrations and municipalities, both in Cyprus and overseas. Graduates will also be in a position to participate in research programs in related fields.
Specific Admission Requirements
Application for admittance to the programme can be submitted by Architects and Civil Engineers, graduates of recognized universities in Cyprus and abroad. All applications will be examined by the Special Interdepartmental Committee.

Application may be submitted also by university graduates whose discipline is related to the subject (for example archaeologists, land surveyors, quantity surveyors etc.). However, the Committee, after examining these applications, will determine the ability of the candidate to attend one of the two streams (Architecture or Civil Engineering)of the program or not.

Candidates, in addition to their application, must submit a list of documents, such as an official copy of their degree, a certified copy of their transcript, CV (up to five pages), a certified certificate of knowledge of at least one foreign language, two letters of recommendation, etc.

All candidates, who meet the criteria, are invited to a personal interview. In exceptional cases, for people who are abroad, the interview can be done either by telephone or videoconference.

During the interview, each candidate should be able to support what is stated in the documents submitted with the application. Every candidate should present a portfolio containing theoretical and applied work and give information about the previous professional or research experience and general knowledge related to historical buildings.

Recognition of Prior Learning
The program recognises formal prior learning activities of students. Specifically, a student that has undertaken formal education at postgraduate level may in relevant fields, may have up to 30 ECTS credits recognised (amounting to one third of the program and 50% of the taught part).

At present, no non-formal or informal prior learning recognition is applicable for the program. It is noted that the University is evaluating a relevant regulation for non-formal and informal learning and the Department will re-evaluate its current position once the said regulation is in place.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
There are no specific examination regulations, assessment and grading methods employed by this Program. The examination regulations, assessment methods and grading system for this Program are the same as the relevant general university regulations.
