Upon completion of the program, postgraduate students are expected to be able to:

1. Know the framework of principles governing interventions in monuments and historical, traditional buildings and structures as described in current legislation and relevant circulars, as well as in international charters and agreements for the protection of monuments, historical buildings and ensembles.
2. Record and accurately map existing buildings using visual observations and metering systems.
3. Recognize the various local and international (mainly Mediterranean and European) building systems of monuments and traditional buildings.
4. Evaluate their existing condition and pathology both as structural systems as well as the materials composing them and recognize their elements of vulnerability.
5. Identify different methods and techniques of intervention, objectives and level of performance (e.g. maintenance, repair, reinforcement, restoration, reuse, etc.)
6. Choose traditional and modern methods of intervention in monuments and historical buildings as well as the appropriate materials for this purpose.
7. Simulate, analyse and document by modern means both the structural system and the static and antiseismic adequacy of the structure and the foundations of historic buildings and monuments, while using ready-made software.
8. Know all the conservation specialties involved, the fields of employment and the competencies of each specialty.
9. Recognize the necessity of the interdisciplinary approach and work with other scientific disciplines in conservation projects, respecting each monument separately as a unique and complex entity.
10. They fully understand and are able to apply the principles of reversibility of compatibility and durability, respecting each monument separately as a timeless entity.
11. They have a full understanding of the work to be carried out during the interventions, including the necessity of carrying out environmental studies where required, utilizing the necessary technical equipment for supporting measures and the way of organizing a site and implementing the plans for security and health and safety measures
12. Know basic matters of other specialties involved in the protection and promotion of cultural heritage, such as archaeology, museology, special lighting, electromechanical installations, insulation, air pollution management and internal environmental conditions, etc.

Historic structures in each country are a very important part of the structured environment. They represent almost all of the structures in archaeological sites and the vast majority of structures in the historic centers of cities and in traditional settlements. Their maintenance, repair and reinforcement, which contributes to their preservation and protection, has always been a timeless need that has arisen and continues to exist due to the continuous use and reuse of these structures.

A significant number of historic buildings are now recognized as monuments. Also, a significant number of historical buildings are characterized as "vernacular buildings" or "under preservation order buildings" and are protected by specific measures and laws which require special treatment of these buildings, especially as regards the use and the interventions in them.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries several theories regarding the philosophy and objectives that should govern the interventions in historical constructions and monuments were formulated. These interventions were enormous after the 1st and 2nd World Wars, as the historic centers of several cities had been destroyed, and the reconstruction and restoration of historic centers was at the heart of the efforts of many, mainly European, states.

The protection of historical structures and monuments is one of the most basic policies of international organizations and states, both in the field of culture and in the field of management of the built environment. In the context of this policy, the huge contribution of these constructions to human civilization is recognized and promoted in all ways by protecting and promoting them both locally, nationally and regionally as well as globally.

Over the past 100 years, there has been strong activity in this field, both at the state and at international level, which has led to the formulation of charters and laws that should govern interventions in historical constructions and monuments. Some of these achievements are illustrated internationally, such as the Athens Charter (1935), the Venice Charter (1963), other declarations and related directives from UNESCO, the European Union and other international organizations. Also, several Member States of the above-mentioned international organizations, and not just Cyprus, are in a constant effort to align with the above international declarations.

This harmonization is achieved, inter alia, through the adoption of national legislation, the adoption of relevant directives, the organization of specific state mechanisms for the monitoring and control of studies and work in the field of the protection and restoration of monuments.

Due to the complexity of these tasks, the necessity of a holistic approach to the problem, which calls for the interdisciplinary approach to protection and intervention, has been recognized and has led to the involvement of several scientific specialists in this field (archaeologists, historians, architects, geologists, civil engineers, chemical engineers, surveying engineers, art conservators, etc.). Furthermore, due to the highly specialized nature of these works, the necessity of educating each scientific specialty in matters relating to protection and interventions in historical and monumental constructions, is recognized.

In Cyprus today there are tens of thousands of traditional buildings and thousands of other historical buildings, most of them declared as monuments or protected by special laws and other provisions. The interventions in these buildings impose specialized knowledge and are awarded to experienced and proven architects and engineers. At the same time, the control of the studies and the work is carried out by competent departments of the state such as:

- Department of Antiquities
- Department of Urban Planning and Housing
- Department of Public Works
- District Administrations
- Turkish Cypriot property maintenance services
- Ministry of Education Technical Services, etc.

The above framework, as described, requires the existence of specialized Architects and Civil Engineers in the field of Conservation and Restoration of Historic Structures and Monuments.
Also, eight Universities (three state and five private) are currently operating in Cyprus. There are three Departments of Civil Engineering and four Architecture Departments. However, there is no Master Program in the field of conservation and restoration of historical constructions and monumentsin any of the other Universities.
It follows that the proposed Master Program is considered absolutely necessary for the Cypriot market and society in general and is believed to contribute to:

- The training of Architects and Civil Engineers in the field of Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Traditional Buildings capable of staffing public services, working as freelancers to meet market needs and to engaging in parallel research activities.
- Promoting interdisciplinary cooperation and research in the above field.
- Promoting cooperation between universities and competent authorities in the wider public sector.
- The transfer of know-how in Cyprus by experienced and internationally renowned professors of foreign universities with many years of research and professional experience.
- To protect the architectural heritage of Cyprus and to preserve and highlight its particular historical and cultural characteristics.

General admission criteria
- The grade of the degree or diploma
- Performance in undergraduate courses, diploma thesis, etc. related to the content of the Master's Program.

Specific admission criteria
- Professional and postgraduate research activity related to the content of the Postgraduate Program.
- Publications in valid scientific publications or other publications related to the Postgraduate Program
- Letters of recommendation
- Assessment of the SIC for the candidate based on a personal interview.

General Criteria for Distance Learning
All Distance Learning Programmes are offered using E-Learning methods. Therefore, students applying to enter DL Programmes, additionally to the academic requirements of each program, must have a good level of digital literacy:

The list of prerequisite digital literacy and equipment that the student should have available in order to participate and be an active member of the program include:

1. Access to reliable broadband internet
2. Computer with camera and microphone capacity
3. Smartphone
4. Ability to send and receive emails and files
5. Ability to operate within a web digital environment such as the learning platform
6. Ability to manage word processing, presentation, and other basic office application functions.

Admission of students to the Postgraduate Program will take place every academic semester. The last application date for the semester is 15 September and for the spring semester January 15th.
Applicants have the right to apply for Architects and Civil Engineers, graduates of recognized universities in Cyprus and abroad.

All applications will be examined by the Special Interdisciplinary Committee (SΙC).
Requests for admission may be submitted by graduates of a university and other subjects related to the subject (e.g. archaeologists, topographers, chemical engineers, quantity surveyors, historians, etc.). However, after examining these applications, the SIC, as described below, decides on the candidate's eligibility for inclusion in one of the two program curricula or not.
In addition to the application, post-graduate students should also submit the following supporting documents:

- Application to the Postgraduate Program Secretariat. The application together with supporting documents is submitted to the Secretariat of the School of Architecture at Frederick University.
- An official copy of a degree or diploma with a diploma certificate as required, as issued by the competent authority of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Cyprus.
- A certified copy of the applicant's graduate grade.
- Curriculum vitae (up to five pages)
- Certified certificate of at least one foreign language. Excluding the submission of a foreign language certificate, university graduates with an official language of instruction in English or another language are excluded.
- Two letters of recommendation. Each letter of recommendation must be enclosed in a closed envelope bearing the "Letter of recommendation of ......... for admission to the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program of Studies of Frederick University entitled" CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION AND OF HISTORICAL STRUCTURES AND MONUMENTS ".
- Photocopy of identity or passport
- A recent photo

All applications and the attached documents are examined by the SIC and a list of candidates fulfilling the admission criteria in the Master Program is drawn up. Candidates who meet these criteria are invited to a personal interview with the SIC. In exceptional cases and for those who are abroad, the interview can be done either by telephone or by teleconference.
During the interview, each candidate should be able to substantiate what is reported in the supporting documents he/she has submitted in their application. Also, each candidate should present a dossier with indicative theoretical, design, and applied papers and can provide convincing answers to the following:

- Reasons for attending the Master's Program
- Earlier professional or research experience
- General knowledge of traditional buildings and monuments.

All candidates who will be invited to a personal interview will be placed in a ranking list drawn up by the SIC. Admission of Candidate Students to the Postgraduate Program is made by the order of classification, which is based on the General and Special Criteria. The weighting ratios of each criterion will be determined by internal rules of the Master's Program.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
i. The performance of students is judged through a wide range of assessment modalities such as exams, written work, e-portfolios, presentations, etc. The course grading will be based on the official scale (0-100). Students failing in one course (under grade 50) will be given a second chance for examination without repeating the course. If fail second time, in case of electives, they can choose another course.
ii. The Master’s thesis can only be undertaken when all necessary compulsory courses have been successfully completed.

Graduation Requirements
Students are eligible for graduation after successfully completing 90 ECTS credits from taught courses and the master thesis listed in the Program Structure, with CGPA greater or equal to 5.00 out of 10.00.

Access to Further Studies
The graduates of the Program have access to doctoral programmes (3rd Cycle) in relevant disciplines.
