Frederick Research Center: leading private Research Centre in RIF funding

Frederick Research Center (FRC) has further strengthened its position as one of Cyprus’ leading research institutions, according to the recently published 2021–2025 Review of the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF).

According to the review, Frederick Research Center ranks 4th nationwide and 1st by a significant margin among private academic and research institutions in securing funding from the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), the national authority responsible for supporting and promoting research, technological development, and innovation national in Cyprus. During the 2021–2025 period, FRC secured €8 million in funding for the implementation of 51 research and innovation projects.

The University of Cyprus secured the highest amount of funding (€28.4 million), followed by the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) with €8.74 million, and The Cyprus Institute with €8.14 million.

Commenting on this achievement, Mr. Alexis Onoufriou, Director of both FRC and the Research and Interconnection Service at Frederick University, stated: “This important distinction reflects, on the one hand, our ability to maintain outstanding performance in a highly competitive environment alongside institutions that benefit from substantial state support and significantly greater infrastructure and human resources. On the other hand, it is the result of years of systematic effort, strategic planning, and the high caliber and capabilities of our research staff. I warmly congratulate our research community for its remarkable efforts and collective commitment to the belief that research should generate meaningful impact by creating new knowledge, advancing innovation, and contributing to addressing society’s challenges and needs.”

The five-year review of the Research and Innovation Foundation highlights, through measurable indicators, FRC’s contribution as coordinator or partner in major research projects that combine scientific excellence with societal impact, demonstrating the positive outcomes of research activities.

These projects span a broad range of fields, including engineering, energy, artificial intelligence, health, maritime, and social sciences, as well as strategic research infrastructure initiatives. Among them is Cyprus’ new meteorological hub, designed to strengthen the country’s capacity to monitor and respond to extreme weather events.

“This success, as a whole, reflects the role that Frederick Research Center and Frederick University play in strengthening the resilience and sustainable development of Cyprus as part of the country’s broader research and innovation ecosystem. In this context, the contribution of the Research and Innovation Foundation is particularly noteworthy, as beyond being a key funding body, it acts as a catalyst for networking, collaboration, and the development of research that delivers tangible societal impact,” Mr. Onoufriou added.

Over the past ten years, FRC and Frederick University have participated in more than 330 education, research, technological development, and innovation projects, attracting a total of €31.5 million in funding from European and national programs.

Its more than 40 research units conduct research aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), seeking interdisciplinary and innovative solutions to global challenges while contributing to a more sustainable future.
