Frederick University collaborates with NGOs to support climate adaptation and community resilience

Frederick University works with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other environmental stakeholders through European research projects and collaborative initiatives to promote climate action, strengthen environmental resilience and support the development of sustainable solutions in Cyprus. These partnerships connect academic research with the experience and expertise of organisations working directly with communities and the environment.

Examples include:

GREAT Project – Collaboration with the Cyprus Energy Agency (2023–2026)

An example is the EU-funded GREAT project (Games Realising Effective and Affective Transformation), implemented from 1 February 2023 to 31 January 2026. Through this project, Frederick University collaborates closely with the Cyprus Energy Agency, a non-governmental, non-profit organisation working to support Cyprus's transition towards a low-carbon economy and strengthen its resilience to climate change.

The project explores how digital games and participatory methods can encourage citizens to engage in climate-related policy discussions and contribute their views to policymaking. Through this collaboration, Frederick University and the Cyprus Energy Agency connect research, public engagement and climate policy, exploring innovative ways to involve citizens and stakeholders in addressing the climate emergency. The initiative supports dialogue on climate-related challenges and encourages greater public participation in shaping climate policies.

Pandoteira (LIFE IP Physis) – Collaboration with environmental NGOs (2019–2029)

Frederick University also participates in the EU-funded Pandoteira project (LIFE18 IPE/CY/000006), running from 10 July 2019 to 31 October 2029. The project brings together government departments, universities and environmental NGOs, including Terra Cypria – The Cyprus Conservation Foundation, BirdLife Cyprus and the Federation of Environmental Organisations of Cyprus. Frederick University participates as an associated beneficiary.

Through this partnership, the University contributes expertise in biodiversity conservation, environmental education and the sustainable management of natural ecosystems. Its collaboration with Terra Cypria has included educational workshops on sustainable business planning and environmentally friendly practices for businesses operating in or near Natura 2000 protected areas. These activities promote the integration of environmental protection into local economic activities and strengthen the capacity of communities and stakeholders to adopt more sustainable practices. The project's focus on protecting natural habitats and ecosystem services also supports nature-based approaches that can contribute to ecosystem resilience and climate adaptation.
