The PhD in Computer Engineering is primarily a research-oriented program offered by the Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Informatics. It provides a framework for pioneering research in the various areas of Computer Engineering. The Program is central to fulfilling the mission of the University through advancing its research dimension, and enabling its establishment in the regional and international scene.
The aims of the Program are (a) pursue research and advance the boundaries of knowledge by creating and disseminate new knowledge, and (b) develop engineers with the necessary background knowledge, skills, experience, ethos, and capabilities that will enable them to contribute in the advancement of knowledge, and serve the overall development of the society.

The language of instruction is English.

The specific program is central to fulfil the Department, the School and the University mission through advancing its research dimension and enabling the establishment of the University, the School and the Department in the regional and international scene. Additionally, the program aims to:
(a) provide a framework for conducting original and innovative state-of-the-art research, leading to the creation of new useful knowledge, that will be beneficial to the science, the economy and the society;
(b) develop highly educated graduates, equipped with the knowledge, skills, ethos and capabilities that will enable them to seek a successful career as researchers or as leading officials in a relevant industry sector;
(c) contribute to the increase of the research output of the Department, through the increase in the publication volume and the external research funding.

Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a substantial knowledge at a great depth in the discipline of Computer Engineering.
2. Demonstrate a comprehensive theoretical and research - based understanding of techniques and methodologies applicable to the discipline of Computer Engineering.
3. Identify and define complex, new and existing problems, and apply appropriate knowledge, skills, tools and methods for their solution.
4. Work with theoretical and research knowledge at the forefront of the discipline of Computer Engineering, at publication quality and peer reviewed standards.
5. Analyse new and/or abstract data and situations without guidance, using a range of appropriate techniques within the context of the research area.
6. Transform abstract data and concepts towards a given purpose and design novel solutions with minimum guidance.
7. Critically evaluate evidence to support conclusions/recommendations, by reviewing its reliability, validity and significance, and investigate contradictory information, identifying reasons for contradictions.
8. Manage and evaluate, with minimum guidance, own learning and apply own criteria of judgement.
9. Analyse and manage the implications of ethical dilemmas and show awareness of personal responsibility and professional codes of conduct.
10. Retrieve and analyze information from different sources, including information retrieval through databases and on-line computer searches.
11. Independently formulate ideas and hypotheses that will extend the forefront of knowledge and to discover new knowledge through original research in the field of Computer Engineering;
12. Demonstrate competency in oral and written communication skills, as well as in the use of relevant computing technologies and tools.
On completion of the program, graduates will have acquired knowledge in high-level scientific research in a wide-range of engineering disciplines and developed the skills and expertise to work in senior positions in academia, or in any relevant research, industrial or business organisation in either the private or public sector. They will have developed attributes essential for a successful career of national and international recognition under professionally challenging conditions in highly competitive work environments.

Admission to the doctoral program is done after the announcement of doctoral positions by the Department, followed by an application by the interested applicant. Eligible applicants must hold a university degree, Bachelor’s and Master’s, granted by an institution recognized in the country where it operates. Applicants who do not hold their first degree at the time of application, but will hold such a degree before the commencement of the graduate program, are also eligible to apply but must submit a letter from their University’s Registrar verifying that they are indeed eligible to graduate. The decision on their admission does not become official until the degree has been successfully produced.

Each application for admission should include:
- A completed application form.
- A Curriculum Vitae indicating the student’s education, academic and research experience, any publications, awards, etc.
- A Research Statement. Candidates with prior graduate studies are required to submit a brief research statement (up to 600 words) stating the area in which they are interested in conducting research. Candidates with no prior graduate level studies do not need to submit a research statement.
- At least two letters of recommendation from academic or professional advisors.
- Certified copies of all degrees and transcripts.
- Copies of any other supporting material, such as exams, honours, awards, etc.
- Proof of English language proficiency, such as the TOEFL, the IELTS, or other equivalent language examinations. Candidates, who have completed an undergraduate or graduate program where the instruction language was English, satisfy the proof of English language proficiency requirement.

The application material must be submitted in English.

Admission’s Evaluation Procedure
All applications for admission are evaluated by the Doctoral Program Committee. All applicants satisfying the admissions requirements are invited for a personal interview by the Doctoral Program Committee. The criteria for the evaluation of the candidates are the following:
- Academic background
- Research background
- Recommendation letters
- Additional qualifications

If necessary, the Doctoral Program Committee may invite a candidate for a personal interview.
After completing the evaluation process, the Doctoral Program Committee submits to the Council of the Department a Program Admission Evaluation Report on its decision. This report includes a justified suggestion of the Committee on the acceptance/rejection of the candidate’s application, possible conditions for admission, transfer credits, and research area. If appropriate, the Committee may suggest in this report the Research Advisor and the members of the Research Advisory Committee.

The doctoral program is based on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). To be awarded the PhD degree, the student must complete at least 180 ECTS credits of doctoral level coursework, research work, and seminar attendance. The normal duration of the program is three years.

The requirements for the successful completion of the doctoral program and the award of the PhD degree are the following:
1. Successful completion of 28 ECTS credits of doctoral level coursework.
2. Passing the PhD qualifying exam.
3. Approval of the doctoral dissertation proposal.
4. Submission of a doctoral dissertation.
5. Successful defence of the doctoral dissertation.
6. Participation to graduate level seminars including research talks and conferences.
7. Successful submission of at least three scientific papers. At least one paper must be published or must be accepted for publication in refereed international journals. At least one paper must be presented in a refereed conference and published in the conference proceedings.
