Our University to co-host Conference on green transition in Education and Design in Brussels

Frederick University is co-organizing an International Conference titled “Exploring Green Futures in Education and Design”. The Conference will be held in Brussels, Belgium, on Tuesday, 15 October 2025, and will be livestreamed.

The Conference is organized in the framework of the “Futures Designed” research project, coordinated by our University in collaboration with the KMOP Policy Center in Belgium, Consorzio Materahub Industrie Culturali E Creative Scarl (Mathub) in Italy, Artit Athens in Greece and Kauno Kolegija in Lithuania.

This international event will bring together educators, researchers, designers, and community stakeholders to explore how the New European Bauhaus values can be embedded in education and design, fostering sustainability, creativity, and innovation. The program will feature keynote presentations and discussions on the New European Bauhaus in education, as well as interactive workshops, presentations of innovative projects and practices from across Europe and a closing discussion on integrating Art & Design micro-credentials in Higher Networking.

Frederick University has been coordinating the Futures Designed research project, which aimed to enhance Arts & Design programs of study towards green practices. “Coordinating this project has been thought-provoking and inspiring. It is our responsibility to develop educational practices that are focused on sustainability and prepare our students to facilitate change by valorizing diversity, equality, accessibility and affordability as synonyms to good quality design”, notes Dr Anna Merry Economou, Assistant Professor at Frederick University’s Department of Arts and Communication, who led the project.

Dr Economou will speak at the Conference on the subject of “Integrating Art & Design micro-credential courses into existing Higher Education: The New European Bauhaus approach”.

Among the keynote speakers are Cypriot entrepreneurs: Ms Christina Dymioti is a UK-based social entrepreneur and marketing professional working in the sustainability industry, and the founder and director of Fashion Heritage Network Cyprus, a youth creative network focused on engaging young creatives and preserving cultural heritage through sustainable fashion. Mr Mustafa Afsaroglu is the co-founder of the award-winning design studio Taner’s Sons, and the Pit-to-table project, a bio-composite made from discarded olive pits and supported by UNDP and the EU.
