Proposal to conduct study on greening the Port of Limassol approved by the EU
We are excited to announce that the European Commission has approved our University's proposal, submitted by the Cyprus Ports Authority, to conduct a techno-economic study on greening the Port of Limassol and reducing the city's emissions.
The study will focus on cold ironing technologies, with the aim of implementing them at the port and thus significantly decreasing the city’s emissions. Cold ironing is the practice of the electrification of ships, allowing them to turn their engines off while docked, reducing air pollutant emissions and noise pollution. Port emissions are one of the leading causes of the high emissions in Limassol.
This achievement is the result of a well-coordinated and productive partnership between academia, the public and private sectors. Our University wishes to express its graditude to the Cyprus Ports Authority, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, the Cyprus Transmission System Operator, Limassol Municipality and port terminal operators DP World, and Eurogate Container Terminal, for the fruitful collaboration.
We are committed to achieving the common goal of greening our ports and promoting environmentally friendly, long-term operations that can benefit the marine sector and the future of our coasts and the coastal city of Limassol.
The proposal was developed by our University's Department of Maritime Transport & Commerce, co-designed under Limassol’s Action Plan to become climate-neutral in an inclusive and sustainable way, by 2030, within the EU Cities Mission.
