An introduction to Design Thinking: Online lecture by Dr Marianna Makri

Design Innovation is at the heart of our second lecture in the Business Guest Lecture Series, taking place on February 11th.

Dr Marianna Makri will give an online lecture on “Design Innovation: An introduction to Design Thinking” and share her expertise in Strategic Management. An Associate Professor in Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the University of Miami, Dr Makri will introduce us to Design Thinking as a methodology for creative problem solving. In this one-hour presentation, participants will be exposed to the four skills that are integral in the human-centred design process: observing, learning from extremes, interviewing, and immersive empathy. Join us in this hands-on learning experience where you will be exposed to the concepts of empathy map, a point of view and a customer journey map. Also, this session covers using rough and rapid prototypes to gather feedback as well as running small experiments to learn from failure in a controlled environment.

Marianna Makri is an Associate Professor of Management and teaches courses in Strategic Management, Entrepreneurship and Family Business at the MBA and Executive MBA level. She received her Ph.D. in Business Administration from Arizona State University and M.A. degree in Mathematics from the University of South Florida. She has published in the areas of corporate governance, corporate strategy and innovation management. Her more recent work focuses on family firms as a unique form of ownership. Her research examines how family firms differ from non-family firms in terms of governance, compensation, innovation, diversification, corporate social responsibility and risk propensity. She has consulted over 50 small and medium enterprises as well as startups in a broad range of industries in the U.S. and Latin America. Further, she has served as a technical expert for Eurostars, an organization that supports international innovative projects led by R&D-performing SMEs.
